Things To Avoid During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a wonderful and unique time in a woman’s life. There is nothing like the experience of growing a life inside your own body. However, everything that a mother does while she is pregnant affects the baby. Here are a few things that you should avoid during pregnancy:

Smoking during pregnancy is dangerous for the mother and the baby. Cigarettes contain chemicals that are poisonous to baby and mother. Ectopic pregnancy, placental abruption, placenta previa, and stillbirth can all be caused by smoking during pregnancy. Additionally, smoking while pregnant can cause the baby to be born with congenital disabilities, low birth weight and even premature birth.

No amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy. Alcohol affects human growth because it is a teratogen. Also, the alcohol can pass through the placenta, causing the baby to consume alcohol each time that the mother does. Drinking during pregnancy can also lead to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

Roller Coasters

Roller coasters and other rides that start and stop suddenly can cause placental abruption. Placental abruption happens when the placenta becomes separated from the uterine wall. This separation can be either partial or complete. If this occurs, it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth. This is because the baby cannot survive once the placenta detaches.

Cat Litter

It can be dangerous during pregnancy to clean a litter box or do gardening in soil that could contain cat feces. Cat feces contains a parasite called toxoplasmosis. The condition can be fatal to the baby but may not cause any symptoms to present themselves in the mother. Women should avoid cleaning a litter box and gardening during pregnancy. Additionally, undercooked meat contains toxoplasmosis as well.

There are several reasons why eating sushi is not safe during pregnancy. Sushi usually contains fish such as tuna, which is high in mercury. Mercury can cause problems with brain development and is believed to be linked to autism. Another issue with sushi is the bacteria that it is commonly found to contain. Bacteria and parasites are killed when food is cooked and reaches a certain temperature. Furthermore, bacteria and parasites usually remain in sushi because it is served raw or lightly steamed, and these can be extremely harmful to a baby.

We are exposed daily to many chemicals that can be dangerous during pregnancy. This includes cleaning and hair care products. Many of these chemicals can be harmful and affect the development of the baby. If you can, have someone else do the cleaning while you are pregnant. If you can’t, at least be sure to wear protective gloves and a mask. Additionally, only use products in an area that is well ventilated.
