Those who suffer from sciatica know that the pain is very real, and can start to interfere with your life in many different facets. Sometimes it’s impossible to find a way to get comfortable, resulting in constant movement throughout the day just to relieve the pain. Nights seem to drag on forever and ever as your body would love to sleep, but your condition makes it impossible to do so.

What is sciatica? The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, across the buttocks and down each leg. Pain radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve,  caused by compression of that nerve.   This compression is usually caused by a bone spur on the spine, a herniated disc, inflammation around the nerve, muscle spasms or a mis alignment of the spine. Those suffering from sciatica usually experience pain on one side, which can be exacerbated by sitting for long periods, and can range from dull, constant pain, to a sharp burning sensation or a quick electric shock.

A visit to a general practitioner will generally result in a prescription for anti-inflammatories, pain killers and muscle relaxers, which may or may not provide some relief. At best, these are a temporary reprieve and don’t treat the root cause of the problem. Patients with ongoing pain may be referred for possible surgical intervention.

Before things get to that point, it’s important to try other non-invasive treatments that have helped others with sciatica find relief. At Lake Pointe Chiropractic and Wellness Center, we offer many services that help relieve pain and  will hopefully correct  the problem. Chiropractic intervention may restore spinal mobility to the point where the sciatic nerve is no longer being strained and causing pain. Massage therapy, acupuncture, stretching, exercising, and nutritional support  will also help those with sciatica achieve relief.

We at lake Pointe Chiropractic and Wellness Center are concerned with overall wellness, and we will also address other issues that may be contributing to the sciatica. Weight issues and diabetes are two of the many conditions that often contribute to this problem, so by helping our patients improve overall wellness, many patients see their secondary health issues improve.
